Explosive fourth-quarter rally not enough as Oregon State falls to Washington State

In women’s basketball, Oregon State gave Washington State a scare, but the Cougars had enough poise and cushion to defeat the Beavers 65-57 at Gill Coliseum on Monday night.

Halfway through the third quarter, OSU was behind 25 points; but, a fantastic fourth-quarter comeback brought the Beavers within three with 1:12 left. After gathering themselves, Washington State made a couple plays and defeated the Beavers to complete the victory and season sweep.

It was the fourth straight defeat for Oregon State (9-13, 5-6 WCC). Just a half-game ahead of eighth-place Santa Clara, the Beavers, who were vying for first place in the West Coast Conference two weeks ago, are now in seventh place.

After making ten three-pointers in the first half, Washington State virtually won the game and never fell behind. Despite not making a single shot from beyond the arc in the second half, the Cougars were unable to overcome a 48-23 advantage with 6:45 left.

Washington State (13-10, 8-4) is one half game behind WCC leader Gonzaga and tied for second place with Portland and Saint Mary’s.

Oregon State was led by 13 points from Catarina Ferreira. Despite shooting only 32%, the Beavers only had 11 turnovers. With 12 shots blocked, Washington State made it challenging inside. Six shots were blocked by Alex Covill.

After a spectacular second quarter in which the Cougars made seven three-pointers to seize control of the game, Washington State led 42-21 at the half.

After one quarter, the Beavers were behind 15–12, but over the following ten minutes, WSU, who shot well, outscored them. In the second quarter, the Cougars outscored OSU 27-9 and made seven three-pointers. In the second quarter, Tara Wallack, who finished first with 12 points for Washington State, shot 3 for 3 from beyond the arc.

When OSU made a comeback attempt with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, the gap had increased to 25 points. The Beavers cut the deficit to 54-34 after three, but it started slowly.

For the opening seven minutes of the third quarter, the Beavers held Washington State to two points by stepping up their defense. With 3:41 remaining, Ferreira made two free throws to reduce the WSU advantage to nine. Shortly after, OSU pulled within 59-56 thanks to four straight points, culminating in a steal and layup from Ferreira.

With 54 seconds remaining, Astera Tuhina made a short jumper to help Washington State comeback. By excluding Oregon State in the final forty-four seconds, the Cougars managed to hang on.
