Editorial cartoons for Jan. 26, 2025: Jan. 6 pardons, Trump executive orders, TikTok flip-flop

On Monday, January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump took the oath of office for the second time. Trump signed more than 100 executive orders later that day and pardoned more than 1,500 individuals who had been accused or found guilty of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

This came after departing President Joe Biden ordered a series of pardons, including preemptive pardons for his family members and the congressional committee that looked into the incident on January 6.

This week’s editorial cartoon gallery is led by Dana Summers, who sees the competing presidential pardons as a high-stakes game of poker. According to Michael Ramirez and Scott Stantis, both presidents are accountable for advancing unfair justice. Walt Handelsman and David Horsey’s cartoons oppose the release of defendants who attacked police officers on January 6th, while Horsey and Mike Luckovich target law enforcement officials for their silence regarding the mass pardons.

Additionally, editorial cartoonists offered their opinions on Trump’s executive orders that reversed climate change efforts and cracked down on immigration (Bill Bramhall); eliminated artificial intelligence restrictions (Joel Pett); and terminated government diversity programs (Summers). Many cartoonists believe that the president’s extensive directives violate the Constitution.

Additionally, Trump signed an order temporarily lifting the ban on TikTok, a social media app controlled by China. Nick Anderson draws a comparison between Americans’ drowsiness in response to threats to democracy and their outrage at TikTok falling black.

The arctic vortex sending snow and freezing temperatures to Southern regions, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s warning to tie conditions to California wildfire help, and the Episcopal bishop of Washington, D.C., making scathing remarks to Trump are among the other news items included in this week’s editorial cartoon gallery.
