Editorial cartoons for Jan. 12, 2025: Greenland or bust, Los Angeles wildfires, Carter funeral

This week’s editorial cartoon gallery focuses on President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to acquire (or invade) Denmark’s independent province of Greenland. Trump is portrayed by Bill Bramhall as the captain of a Viking ship that is set to touch down on the cold shore of Greenland. One crew member comments, “I thought he was going to lower the price of eggs.” By the way, the head of Greenland answered, “No, thank you.”

In addition to Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Canada, Dana Summers has Trump shopping for groceries. Drew Sheneman also echoes this theme. Nick Anderson emphasizes how ironic it is to target buddies rather than enemies. According to Steve Breen, annexing Canada would probably give Democrat Kamala Harris the president in 2028. Jack Ohman, Mike Luckovich, and Joey Weatherford offer their thoughts on Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

This week’s editorial cartoons also frequently discuss the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. David Horsey’s and Breen’s perspectives on LA in flames are similar. Michael Ramirez attributes the devastation to the Devil Winds. The MAGA man from Phil Hands is holding a blazing A fake sign is climate change.

President Joe Biden’s rejection of the U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel merger; Trump’s sentencing in the Stormy Daniels hush-money case; the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100; the once-routine certification of the Electoral College vote on January 6; and the Surgeon General’s warnings about the health risks of modern life occupy the remaining gallery.

Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen, and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate, as well as Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett, and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency, drew the cartoons.
