Editorial cartoons for Feb. 9, 2025: Elon Musk buyouts, Trump tariff threats, Gaza takeover

On Thursday, around two million government employees were expected to arrive at Elon Musk’s fork in the road. An email with that subject line informed them that they had to decide between being laid off or accepting a buyout. While he weighs the claims of public employee unions that it is unlawful, a federal judge postponed the deadline until at least Monday.

Nick Anderson observes Musk inserting a fork into a figure that stands for accountability in the editorial cartoon gallery’s featured image. The billionaire space and auto magnate is a unique government employee in the Trump administration, but he lacks transparency and oversight. The Department of Government Efficiency’s compromise of private financial data and sensitive payment systems has drawn criticism.

According to Mike Luckovich, Musk is looting America’s house, and the Republican Party is just a watchdog as he does it. Musk, played by Bill Bramhall, is Godzilla destroying Washington while Congress replaces the American flag at the Capitol with the white flag of surrender. Steve Breen depicts Donald Trump and Elon Musk as the two heads of a presidency.

The closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development by Musk has also drawn criticism from cartoonists. Musk is portrayed by Dana Summers as the cat that gets rid of the rodents. Joel Pett witnesses Musk and Trump ignoring a child who is starving.

Decades of American diplomacy in the Middle East were upended by Trump’s unexpected plan to seize control of the debris-strewn Gaza Strip and relocate the Palestinian people. Trump is a bulldozer in a china shop, according to Breen.

Trump’s threats of tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Waffle House’s decision to charge more for eggs due to their high cost and scarcity, and the administration’s termination of diversity initiatives are some of the other subjects covered in this week’s gallery.

Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen, and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate, as well as Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett, and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency, drew the cartoons.
