In Northwest Portland, the DoveLewis veterinary hospital has established a new location across the street from its current structure.
In 2023, the Northwest Pettygrove Street animal hospital revealed plans to build a new 30,000-square-foot facility to increase space for critical care and emergency services and shorten wait times in its current structure.
The only Level 1 veterinary trauma center in Oregon is DoveLewis, which admits emergency cases 24/7.
The new structure, named Whiskers, enables the hospital to grow its specialized departments, which has been a goal for the nonprofit organization for more than ten years, according to Ron Morgan, president and CEO of DoveLewis.
According to Morgan, the underlying premise of all of this is that veterinary medicine and human healthcare are very similar. Similar to a human hospital center that offers more than only an emergency room or intensive care unit (ICU), we aimed to expand a veterinary medical center with specialists.
Three surgery suites, eight emergency treatment rooms, and twelve exam rooms are added in the new structure. According to Morgan, the extra room also enables DoveLewis to house cutting-edge diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray capabilities that are unavailable at the majority of veterinary hospitals.
According to him, the hospital’s new 3 Tesla MRI machine, for instance, can provide high definition images more quickly than conventional MRIs, requiring less time for the animals to be sedated and within the scanner.

According to Morgan, there is a growing need for specialized services and cutting-edge technologies as a result of pet owners’ willingness to spend more money on their animals’ care.
According to Morgan, the veterinary care sector has undergone significant transformation, and more individuals now demand cutting-edge treatment for their animals. People regard their pets as members of their family, which is why DoveLewis is growing and will continue to grow and offer specific services.
According to the foundation, DoveLewis has added roughly 20 new staff members for the new facility, including support personnel and veterinarians with expertise in internal medicine, neurology, and radiology. The hospital is currently employing additional surgeons and specialists.
Morgan claims that DoveLewis’s development places it among the biggest veterinary medical campuses outside of academic institutions.
Mackenzie was engaged by DoveLewis to design the new structure, and Skansa was hired to build it.
