Denver group lands NWSL team for record expansion fee, Sportico reports

DENVER Sportico.com said Thursday that the NWSL’s 16th team is traveling to Denver for a record $110 million expansion fee.

It’s the biggest expansion fee in U.S. women’s sports history and more than quadruple the previous NWSL record for new teams. Finalists for the new franchise also included teams from Cincinnati and Cleveland.

The Denver organization made its first payment to the league on Tuesday, according to Sportico, which cited unnamed sources because the information is confidential. Sportico claims that Robert Cohen, the CEO of IMA Financial Group, is in charge of the group and will eventually take ownership of the squad.

Last season, the Bay FC and Utah Royals joined the NWSL. A Boston-based team has agreed to pay the same $53 million expansion fee as Bay FC in order to enter the league in 2026.

Sports business executive Tom Dunmore, former Obama administration official Ben Hubbard, CEO of Denver-based insurance company Parsyl, Phos CEO Nicole Glaros, and former NWSL star Jordan Angeli are all part of the Cohen-led group.

Until a soccer stadium can be constructed, the group has stated that it will perform in a temporary location.
