Chicago police have reported a significant number of arrests shortly after the conclusion of the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade in Lake View, totaling nearly 60 individuals. Charges ranged from reckless conduct to more serious offenses such as battery, gun possession, and resisting arrest, highlighting concerns over public safety at the event.
The aftermath of this year’s parade, coupled with previous instances of violence during the 2022 event, has sparked a debate about potentially relocating the parade downtown for 2025. Longtime Chicago Tribune columnist and Channel 7 commentator Laura Washington has joined the discussion, emphasizing a shift in focus from “pandemonium” to the celebration of Pride itself.
Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to queries regarding the parade’s future location during an unrelated press briefing, acknowledging the city’s reputation for vibrant celebrations while underscoring the need for enhanced security measures. He pledged to consult with the LGBTQ+ advisory council to determine the best course of action for Chicagoans.
In her column, Washington questioned the suitability of Lake View as a venue, advocating for a safer environment that can better accommodate the parade’s significance in LGBTQ+ culture. She highlighted the widespread embrace of LGBTQ+ communities across Chicago and suggested a reassessment of the parade’s location to ensure its safety and accessibility.
