2024 was another fantastic year for me as the collegiate and professional sports editor for the Defender. Telling the tales of some of the most significant events in the local sports scene was a delight.
We were present when, following some backroom wrangling, Texas Southern acquired former Houston Oilers defensive back Cris Dishman as a football coach to be proud of and thrilled about. However, it didn’t stop there. Andre Johnson, a Houston Texans receiver, was ultimately called into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after being eligible for it for the previous two years. And as Johnson celebrated being the first player from the Texans to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, the Defender was there to narrate the story using his own words.
The Astros recovered from a poor start to once again qualify for the postseason, but they were unable to pursue another AL pennant, which seemed to be our right under Dusty Baker. In relation to the playoffs, how thrilling was it to watch the Texans end years of futility by winning the AFC South and qualifying for the postseason in the first season under quarterback C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans? We’re anticipating the encore.
