Deadly North Portland rollover crash may have happened in street race, police say

According to investigators, street racing may have been a factor in a deadly rollover incident that claimed one life on Saturday night.

When police in Portland arrived at the scene of the collision at North Leadbetter Road and North Marine Drive at approximately 10:33 p.m., they discovered that a car had rolled and that a male teen had perished. The identity of the driver, who remained at the site, and the name and age of the deceased adolescent were not disclosed by the police.

According to preliminary police work, the driver and other drivers and onlookers were involved in a street takeover. Some waited, but many departed without talking to the police.

According to The Oregonian/OregonLive, local police have had difficulty stopping street takeovers, in which vehicles compete with one another and do feats in front of onlookers. According to authorities, they have increased in frequency since the COVID-19 epidemic, and in 2023, at least 139 of these incidents occurred in Portland.

Street racers may spend up to 364 days in jail under a law passed by Governor Tina Kotek last year.

Police encouraged anybody with information about the collision to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit at [email protected], mentioning case number 24-306793.

According to authorities, Saturday’s collision was Portland’s 65th traffic-related death of the year.
