A teenager was arrested following a shooting at NorthPark Mall in Davenport, Iowa, which left the teen and another individual injured, causing chaos as people fled for safety.
According to Davenport Police, the 16-year-old was apprehended on multiple weapons charges after it was discovered he had been taken to a hospital in a private car following the shooting on Monday afternoon. Davenport, a city of 100,000 located along the Mississippi River, saw its usually peaceful mall turn into a scene of panic.
The police reported that the teenager and another person exchanged gunfire inside the mall. Thankfully, their injuries were not life-threatening.
As the shots rang out, shoppers and mall employees sought refuge in store dressing rooms and other hiding spots, while many others ran out of the mall in fear.
Jason Signer and Isabelle Ortiz, both 18, recounted their experience to the Quad-City Times. They were seated in the mall when they heard shouting, followed by people running. “Then there was one gunshot,” Ortiz said. “And then two more. I was in shock, I think.”
