The defensive back and wide receiver, who is predicted to win the Heisman Trophy next month, announced on Thursday that he will enter the 2025 NFL draft. The junior, who hasn’t officially declared for the draft yet, is expected to be selected in the top five.
When questioned about his plans for the NFL draft during a call with media, Hunter responded, “That’s definitely for sure.”
Hunter is ranked as the draft’s top prospect by several draft analysts. Whether he will be assessed as a wide receiver or a cornerback is the key question. Hunter stated that, although it is uncommon at the NFL level, he thought he could be a two-way player. Hunter’s coach at Colorado, Deion Sanders, was among the final players to play both ways.
When asked about playing two positions full-time in the NFL, Hunter responded to reporters, “It’s never been done.” I am aware that there will be a significant risk involved, and I know that [teams] will want me to be in a few packages because they don’t want their top pick to be cut too soon. But I think I’m capable. So yet, no one has prevented me from doing it.
With 74 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season, Hunter has already set career highs. In addition, he has eight passes defensed, a forced fumble, three interceptions, and 24 tackles. After averaging over 115 snaps per game in 2023, he is playing an average of 120 snaps per game in 2024.
Together with quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Hunter has propelled the Buffaloes into the Big 12 championship battle. The Buffaloes (8-2) will go to the Big 12 championship game if they defeat Kansas and Oklahoma State in their final two games of the season.
