Chronic absenteeism finally begins to rebound in Oregon schools. There’s still a long way to go.

While nearly every other state saw recovery from post-pandemic lows, Oregon saw a welcome and long-overdue turnaround in chronic absenteeism, as the number of public school students regularly missing large amounts of school fell by nearly 4 percentage points in 2023–2024.

The Oregon Department of Education released data on Thursday showing that 34.3% of children in the state are still missing more than 10% of school days. Their prospects of learning to read and graduating from high school are diminished by such truancy, which can have detrimental effects that last a lifetime.
