Chicagoland Hit by Severe Weather: Fatality and Extensive Power Outages Reported

A deadly storm hit Cedar Lake, Indiana, on Monday night when a tree fell on a house, killing one person. Sgt. Glen Fifield from the Indiana State Police confirmed the death but provided no further details about the person involved.

    The Storm Prediction Center had earlier upgraded the Chicago area to a Moderate Risk for severe weather, indicating a high likelihood of extensive and severe storms. As expected, the storms battered the area for several hours before calming down.

    A Tornado Watch covered the entire Chicago area until 1 a.m., and damage reports soon followed. The region faced downed trees, traffic accidents, and power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of homes.

    A notable incident involved a 50-year-old oak tree being blown over in South Elgin. Throughout the evening, numerous Tornado Warnings were issued across various counties in Indiana and Illinois, with some confirmed tornadoes touching down, such as near Sugar Grove, IL.

    Warnings included Tornado Warnings for counties like LaPorte, Porter, Lake, Jasper, Newton, Kankakee, Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kendall, Grundy, Kane, and McHenry at different times. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Flash Flood Warning were also issued. O’Hare Airport experienced a ground stop, and UPNW trains were halted near Woodstock due to high winds.

    Residents were warned to prepare for severe weather hazards, including damaging winds, tornadoes, flooding, and hail. The primary threat was straight-line winds expected to reach 70-80 mph, with severe weather predicted from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

    The weather forecast for Tuesday indicated a significant improvement, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-80s. Cooler weather was expected midweek, with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees on Wednesday. Thursday was forecasted to be sunny with highs in the mid-70s.
