Chicago police are currently investigating a string of smash-and-grab burglaries that occurred early Tuesday morning. These incidents have left local businesses counting their losses and authorities working to piece together the events.
The first reported burglary took place just after 3:20 a.m. at 9300 Food and Liquor, located at East 93rd Street and South Stony Island Avenue in Calumet Heights. A group of suspects forcibly broke through the front door and made off with various merchandise. The suspects fled in an unknown direction, but responding officers managed to apprehend two individuals, with charges pending against them.
A little less than an hour later, at 4:15 a.m., another group of suspects targeted a clothing store in the 1300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. They broke the front window, stole merchandise, and escaped in two white SUVs and a white sedan. The suspects’ direction of escape remains unknown, and no arrests have been made in connection with this burglary. Area Five detectives are currently investigating this case.
In another related incident, a large police presence was observed at Mr. G’s Food and Liquor near East 58th Street and South Calumet Avenue in Washington Park. Chicago police have not yet provided additional information about this incident, and it remains unclear if it is connected to the other burglaries that took place earlier.
The Chicago police are also investigating a series of 14 business burglaries on the city’s Southwest Side, some of which occurred just minutes apart. While it is not immediately clear if the crimes are related, the pattern suggests a possible coordinated effort.
