Residents of the Budlong Woods neighborhood in Chicago are grappling with fear and unease following a broad daylight shootout on Thursday evening. The incident unfolded around 6:00 p.m. as witnesses reported a black car chasing a dark-colored SUV, with occupants of both vehicles exchanging gunfire along Virginia Avenue.
Long-time resident Billy Sturch, who has lived in the area for nearly 40 years, recounted hearing the shots and finding shell casings strewn across the street. “Heard two cars kind of screech their tires. And then we heard about eight shots go off,” Sturch said. “It’s a little scary feeling like everything is getting too close to home.”
While no injuries were reported, the incident left neighbors rattled. One woman walking her dog hid in a nearby yard, while another resident took cover inside her car as the shots rang out. Several vehicles were struck by bullets, leaving punctured tires in the aftermath.
Alderman Andre Vasquez’s office confirmed that shell casings were collected from the three-block-long scene. Neighbors are now being asked to provide any surveillance footage they may have to aid in the investigation.
