CenterPoint Energy prepares Houston for winter storms: What you need to know

CenterPoint Energy is working harder to avoid power outages similar to those that occurred during the notorious freeze a few years ago as Houston gets ready for the potential of freezing temperatures and icy conditions next week.

In the Houston region, the business has been implementing cold-weather precautions throughout its gas and electric infrastructure while working with first responders and local and state teams. In an effort to prevent tree-related power line damage, which resulted in extensive disruptions during past severe storms, CenterPoint has pruned more than 3,500 kilometers of high-risk vegetation since August.

Matt Lanza, CenterPoint’s Meteorology Manager, stated, “We’re keeping an eye on the severe cold weather that’s predicted to hit the Greater Houston area starting on MLK Day.” In anticipation of possible winter storms, our team is closely monitoring models and advising clients to remain vigilant about circumstances.

According to early estimates, Sunday through Thursday could see cold temperatures and precipitation, which could cause power outages and frozen power lines. Houstonians were comforted by Darin Carroll, Senior Vice President of Electric Business at CenterPoint, who said, “Our teams are ready to respond quickly and safely to any impacts.” To effectively restore service, we have improved staffing arrangements and deployed crews throughout the area.

The business advises Houstonians to stay weather-aware and make emergency plans in order to be ready for the cold. Additionally, CenterPoint advises locals to report downed electrical lines right soon and to keep a minimum of 35 feet away from them.
