Evanston Township High School, located just outside Chicago, is implementing a new policy this fall that will ban cellphones from classrooms. The decision aims to minimize distractions and improve focus among students.
Under the new rules, phones will be stored in designated areas during class time and retrieved during a 10-minute break between class periods. This initiative follows positive feedback from the school’s summer programs.
Principal Taya Kinzie notes that the policy addresses concerns over emergency situations. By avoiding phone distractions, students and staff can focus on proper emergency protocols without the interference of phones lighting up during critical moments.
While Florida and Indiana have enacted similar bans, and California is contemplating one, Illinois currently lacks statewide regulations on this issue.
