Californian accused of murder after discovery of dead man in debris of Salem apartment fire

during the discovery of another man deceased during a fire in a Salem apartment, the Salem Police Department said that a 44-year-old California man had been taken into custody.

Around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters found Kristopher Douglas Stokes, 38, dead after a suspicious apartment fire in the 1100 block of Chemeketa Street Northeast, according to officials. The death was declared a homicide by the state medical examiner.

David James Damon Alexander was taken into custody by an officer on Commercial Street NE close to Division Street NE in Salem, according to the police. Alexander is accused of third-degree robbery and second-degree murder.

While the investigation is ongoing, no information about the homicide has been made public. Additionally, Salem police spokesperson Angela Hedrick stated that the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Only one unit in the building was destroyed by the fire, according to the Salem Fire Department.

On October 30, a guy born in 1979 and identified in court records as David James Alexander was arrested in Multnomah County on a number of counts, including larceny, menacing, escape III, and disorderly conduct.

According to Oregon court records, he was convicted of criminal assault in Thurston County, Washington, in 2006, misdemeanor battery in Los Angeles County in 2004, and felony battery in San Bernadino County, California, in 2000.

The Marion County Jail is where he is being detained.
