Body of fisherman from Coos Bay whose boat capsized in Alaska found

The bodies of Jake Hannah, a Coos Bay fisherman who perished on December 1 when a fishing boat crashed off the coast of Alaska, and another member of the crew of five have been discovered.

Hannah’s best friend’s mother, Tiffany Yates, posted on a GoFundMe page on Wednesday, saying, “We are so relieved that we can finally bring him home to Oregon where he belongs.” We are devastated that a better result was not obtained.

The information was released nearly two weeks after Hannah’s boat, the Wind Walker, sent out a mayday call at 12:10 a.m. stating that the vessel was having problems. All evidence of the boat and its occupants had disappeared by the time the Coast Guard reached the last known position of the vessel.

Ben Martinez-Yates, Hannah’s childhood best friend and a fisherman, claimed in a prior interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive that the Wind Walker was attempting to capture halibut in deep waters.

“The weather is really bad up in Alaska at this time of year,” he remarked. There are certain things for which you simply cannot prepare.

He claimed that any optimism he had that his companion might still be alive was dashed on Thursday when he learned that Hannah’s body had been discovered.

He remarked that the news was “just kind of a shock, almost disbelief.” Compared to earlier, it is now more real.

Hannah’s death was also mourned by friends and relatives in Hannah’s homeland as well as by other people who knew him in Alaska. The 22-year-old was characterized as a kind and considerate friend and family member who would go above and beyond to assist others.

His mother, Carol Hannah, told The Oregonian/OregonLive about Jake Hannah’s body’s recovery, which makes me pleased because it gives us some closure. However, the fact that Jake has been returned home does not mean that we will stop searching for the other three boys who still need to be brought home to their family made my heart ache.
