“People are really targeting Edgewood because they’re realizing there are some valuable items, including firearms, in these cars,” said Sgt. Jarod Buchanan with the Edgewood Police Department.

Police said that they’ve had numerous guns stolen from unlocked cars in recent months.

“We’ve really been tracking this for the past six months. I believe we’ve had five or six firearms taken at this time,” said Sgt. Buchanan.

That includes an incident in November and two others just before Christmas. Gary Strong said that two of his guns were taken from his truck outside his home on Village Drive.

“One of the pieces they got was in a locked bank bag that you had to have a key to unlock it, and they took a knife and cut it open and got the contents out of it,” said Strong. “You couldn’t see either one of them, and it was just a random break-in, I guess. They got lucky and found two pistols.”

Strong said that one of those guns was a gift to his late father.

“He carried that pistol till he passed, and I got it back when he passed,” said Strong.

Strong said that he gave police information, including the serial numbers for the guns that were stolen from him, but police said that none of the guns that have been taken have been found so far.

“We don’t want people taking these firearms. That’s not good for anyone,” said Sgt. Buchanan. “So, if we can really just have those cars locked up and maybe have those firearms taken in for the night, that would be the best thing.”

If you have any information about the thefts, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513)-352-3040.
