Beaverton district to pay $50K to high school football player allegedly slapped by coach

In order to resolve a complaint brought by the mother of a football player from Westview High School who claimed that her son was slapped in the face by his coach after being abruptly awakened in the middle of the night during a summer sports camp, the Beaverton School District has agreed to pay $50,000.

The 17-year-old football player, who is currently in his senior year, was one of 12 teenagers who attended the overnight sports camp in June 2024. According to the prosecution, their coach, Jamal Jones, allegedly slapped, groped, or otherwise harassed the players while they slept in a gym at Linfield University in McMinnville. Jones told police that he had consumed four beers prior to going on the 1 a.m. rampage, which scared the players and caused them to disperse, according to court documents.

The mother of the 17-year-old has been the lone parent to sue the school district. Jones, who will defend 12 counts of misdemeanor harassment in a four-day criminal trial in Yamhill County Circuit Court next week, has not been sued.

The Portland lawyer defending the 17-year-old in the case, Michael Fuller, chose not to comment. However, Fuller detailed the terms of the settlement in court documents he submitted last month, which included the kid receiving roughly $42,500 to assist with college expenses. The settlement includes around $7,500 for expert fees and court costs. Fuller’s court declaration states that he is not charging attorney fees.

Shellie Bailey-Shah, a school district spokesperson, declined to comment on Monday.

When the complaint was filed in August, the teen’s mother told The Oregonian/OregonLive that her son was psychologically shaken by Jones’s smack, which left a red welt on his face for hours.

The day following the event, Jones resigned as coach of Westview High School. As of Tuesday, he is still on paid administrative leave and is still a Hillsboro police officer.
