According to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, a math instructor at Banks High School was taken into custody on Tuesday on suspicion of having sex with a pupil.
Wymon Smith, 66, is accused of enticing a minor and second-degree sexual abuse. According to the sheriff’s office, Smith was put on leave on January 7 after the school district informed authorities of the accusations made against him.
Smith’s name and picture are still listed under Teaching Staff on the Banks School District website as of Wednesday morning.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, detectives started looking into the matter last week and discovered that Smith had sexually improper interactions with several children and had intercourse with at least one student on school grounds.
Detectives think there may be more victims, according to the sheriff’s office, and they want anyone with information to contact 503-846-2500. The inquiry is still ongoing.
Smith was charged less than two weeks after a choir instructor at St. Helens High was indicted in a student sex-abuse case that rocked the Columbia County school district.
