Banks High math teacher faces new sex crime allegations from 2009

After deputies claim they have discovered a second victim, Wymon Smith, a math instructor accused of sexually abusing a pupil at Banks High School, was detained once more on Thursday.

Five more accusations, including first-degree sexual assault and sodomy, were added to an indictment filed Monday in Washington County Circuit Court. The charges were allegedly committed against a girl under the age of eighteen in 2009 and 2010.

According to an indictment, the inquiry started on January 7 after a Banks High student claimed that Smith had touched her and discussed sexual activity with her the day before.

Superintendent Brian Sica said that Smith was placed on administrative leave and remains there after being arrested the following week on accusations of second-degree sexual abuse and enticing a juvenile.

“We are deeply concerned about this in our community,” Sica remarked.

The teacher was freed on January 28 after posting $2,500 in cash on his $25,000 bond.

According to deputies, the fresh charges resulted from 20 people contacting them since the initial arrest.

According to The Oregonian sarchive, Smith was the athletic director before starting as a teacher in the Banks School District in 2004. According to deputies, he taught in Astoria in the early 2000s and Nevada in the early 1990s.

Smith, a McMinnville resident, was taken into custody on Thursday and is currently being taken to the Washington County Jail. Krista Shipsey, his defense lawyer, would not comment.
