At Hillsboro Stadium on Friday afternoon, West Linn defeated Lake Oswego 43-30 in the Class 6A open championship game, the greatest Three Rivers League clash in history.
On the first drive of the game, Hudson Hardy sprang forward for a 5-yard touchdown run to give West Linn (11-1) the lead.
West Linn scored again when Baird Gilroy connected with Danny Wideman for a 10-yard touchdown throw after the Lakers were stuffed on fourth down and one.
Zander Morris made a field goal from 32 yards out to give the Lions a 17-0 lead late in the first quarter.
West Linn was given the punt on their own side of the field after Lake Oswego was put at the 1-yard line by a huge sack. Viggo Anderson made it 24-0 with a 14-yard run a couple plays later.
Nine minutes into the second quarter, Lake Oswego finally came alive. Baron Kurland and quarterback Hudson Kurland made a 44-yard reception. The Lakers’ first goal of the afternoon came two plays later from a 3-yard dash by LaMarcus Bell.
West Linn regained possession of the ball after Xavier Harris made an interception. Anderson’s 13-yard touchdown run completed the decisive Lions drive, adding another score and putting West Linn ahead 31–7.
Bell made it 31-14 heading into the locker room with a 1-yard touchdown on a straight snap on the last play of the first half.
West Linn instantly stepped up its game as the second half began. A Hudson Kurland pass was intercepted by Cole Dickson, who moved in front of it. Gilroy made it 38-14 a few plays later with a deep toss to Wideman, who caught it for a 26-yard touchdown.
In order to stay in the game, Lake Oswego executed a trick play on the subsequent drive. After a tackle for loss nearly broke up a reverse pitch to Liam Davis, the Lakers’ quarterback from the previous season sent the ball downfield to Kurland, who ran untouched for a 34-yard score.
As Lake Oswego supporters started to leave Hillsboro Stadium with less than 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Gilroy found Wideman for a 6-yard touchdown once more to take a 44-22 advantage.
After Kurland found Bell for an 8-yard touchdown run, the Lakers were able to score again to start the fourth quarter. With less than nine minutes remaining in the game, a successful two-point conversion put the score at 44-30.
Bell scored a late touchdown to give the Lakers a 21-17 victory over West Linn in their previous meeting between the two teams earlier in the season.
The final record for Lake Oswego is 11-1.
