An attempted armed robbery at a South Side Chicago gas station turned deadly on Wednesday morning when the intended victim defended himself with a knife.
The incident occurred at Falcon Fuel on South Halsted in Auburn Gresham, where a 36-year-old man was confronted by two would-be robbers. The assailants, both on pretrial release for pending felony cases, attacked the victim, demanding his property.
During the struggle, the victim managed to stab one of the robbers, a 38-year-old man, in the neck, leading to his death shortly after at the University of Chicago Hospital.
The other suspect, a 20-year-old, struck the victim in the face with a firearm but did not fire any shots. Police later apprehended both robbers and recovered the weapon used in the assault.
The surviving suspect faces pending charges, while the victim received treatment for facial injuries at the same hospital. The deceased robber had been on the run from a previous case involving a DUI-related license revocation.
