Amid Rising Utility Bills, New York Woman Demands Investigation Into Con Edison’s Billing Methods

New York woman is demanding an investigation into Con Edison’s billing system, alleging that her electricity costs have surged despite using minimal power.

In a video shared on Instagram, she detailed her latest bill , which totaled nearly $115—even though she consumed only $21 worth of electricity.

The woman pointed out that while Con Edison has reduced labor costs by eliminating meter checkers due to smart meters, delivery fees and other charges continue to climb.

“Ever since they put in those electric meters, the bills have been out of control,” she said. “They got rid of meter readers, so they’re paying fewer employees , but somehow we’re paying more.”

Her bill showed a $21.29 charge for electricity, but delivery and service fees amounted to $53.40. Additionally, she was charged a $ 36.72 gas service fee despite not using any gas that month.https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHyBl1ig_aw/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

She also raised concerns about Con Edison’s deposit system, noting that deposits—sometimes amounting to thousands of dollars for commercial properties—are held indefinitely without transparency about whether they accrue interest or are invested.

The video has resonated with many New Yorkers, some of whom shared similar complaints about unexplained charges and rising rates.

Calls for regulatory scrutiny are growing, with consumers questioning whether the utility company’s pricing structure is fair and transparent.
