AJ Marotte’s 21 points leads Oregon State past Boston College as Beavers end 4-game losing streak

At the Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas, Oregon State overcame a sluggish fourth quarter to defeat Boston College 54-49 on Wednesday.

With 1:02 remaining, Kennedie Shuler made the game-winning jumper, and the Beavers (2-5) managed to end a four-game losing streak. No. 2 Connecticut and No. 18 Mississippi played for the championship after this, which was the Baha Mar consolation game.

The Beavers were led by AJ Marotte with 21 points and Kelsey Rees with 13. Rees pulled down nine rebounds as well.

After going scoreless for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, Oregon State overcame a five-point deficit to defeat Boston College 14–4 in the last 3:11.

With 13 points, Tyana Todd led the Eagles (6-3).

Oregon State led 23–22 at the break after a 9–0 surge to end the second quarter. The Beavers shut out Boston College in the last 2:59 of the first half, overcoming a 1 of 10 three-point shooting effort and 10 turnovers.

After a first quarter in which neither team had a lead of more than one possession, the Beavers led 12–11. In the first seven minutes of the second quarter, Boston College controlled the game, limiting OSU to only one point before Rees’ tip-in put them ahead 22–14. However, Rees’ rebound basket got the Beavers moving, and they ended the quarter with nine points in a row.

Marotte’s jumper at the buzzer gave OSU the advantage going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the offenses improved. During a 17-point quarter, Marotte went 3 for 3 and OSU was 8 of 10 from the field. Todd’s three-pointer at the buzzer cut Oregon State’s lead to 40-39, and Boston College equaled the Beavers’ output.

It turned into a defensive battle in the fourth quarter. Before Marotte made a three-pointer with 3:11 remaining in the quarter, Oregon State had a 0–7 start to the quarter and failed to score any points. Boston College took a 45–40 lead before Marotte’s three-pointer put an end to the run. Rees made a three-pointer a minute later to give OSU a short-lived 46-45 advantage.

Shuler’s placed Oregon State ahead with one minute remaining in the game, which was subsequently knotted at 46-46. Tiara Bolden made four of the Beavers’ six free throws to seal the victory.

The Beavers take on Grambling State at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the return home game for Oregon State after a five-game road journey. Schoolchildren from the Willamette Valley come to Gill Coliseum for OSU’s annual Field Trip Game.
