Having a supermajority in both houses of the Oregon Legislature raises conflicting emotions in me as a lifelong Democrat (Democrats gain supermajority in Oregon House as Mu oz scores upset in Woodburn-area district, Nov. 27). With a few noteworthy exceptions, I think that bipartisan legislation is the best and most durable. I also know very well that about 40% of my fellow Oregonians did not cast ballots in the same way that I did.
The two parties have the chance to cooperate during this next session in order to show that they are capable of successfully addressing the pressing issues that voters in every section of the state and on all sides of the political spectrum have. Republicans must be proactive in securing responsible and responsive answers, while Democrats must avoid the temptation to merely impose their agenda.
