Two guys in a black Hyundai Sonata have been spotted acting strangely close to Ida B. Wells High School in the Hillsdale neighborhood, and Portland police are looking into the incident.
On Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m., a student claimed that a dark car carrying two or more guys followed her home after practice, slowing down and speeding up to keep up with her. According to the student, she fled safely home when a man got out of the car and glared at her while she was hiding behind a dumpster.
Another girl said that two guys in a black Hyundai Sonata approached her close to the school on November 14 at 12:30 p.m., which was the subject of a second incident that was reported on Monday. According to authorities, she claimed that one of them made an attempt to talk to her before hiding in some bushes while the car circled and eventually drove off.
In a message given to families on Tuesday, Ida B. Wells High School principal Ayesha Coning confirmed the instances.
Coning stated in the statement, “I recognize that such reports can cause anxiety and concern.” My first concern has always been and will continue to be the safety of the pupils at Ida B. Wells.
Coning also gave students safety advice, such as traveling in groups, being vigilant, and following your gut when something feels off. Additionally, she urged kids to report any safety problems in Oregon schools to SafeOregon, a private tip line for students, parents, school employees, and community members. You can report tips using the SafeOregon app, via text or phone at 844-472-3367, or by email at [email protected].
In response, Portland police say they are stepping up patrols in the vicinity of the school. In addition to reminding kids and teenagers to never approach a car driven by a stranger, police are requesting that parents talk to their kids about safety procedures.
The National Crime Prevention Council website has more advice on how to interact with strangers.
