Former Oregon high school star prepares for long-awaited return with the San Francisco 49ers

Although injuries have plagued the San Francisco 49ers this season, there is some positive news regarding their health.

The 49ers opened the 21-day practice window for All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga on Monday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed, during a week in which they placed backup Jordan Mason and standout running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve.

Hufanga, who has only played in two games this season, has had a difficult season.

As he continues to recover from an ACL tear he sustained late in the 2023 season, the former Crescent Valley High School standout began the season on the inactive list and missed the first two games. Before missing Week 4, he made his 2024 season debut in a Week defeat against the Los Angeles Rams. He returned for Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, but missed the following seven games due to severe wrist ligament damage.

When Hufanga resumes practice on Wednesday, he won’t be completely healed. Hufanga will wear some kind of wrist protection, according to Shanahan.

Indeed, Shanahan said reporters on Monday that he would need to have something on it. He’s tried a few things on it; we’re not sure exactly what he’ll have, but he needs to have something on it, and this week we’ll see how it works out.

In his contract year, Hufanga must return to the field and demonstrate that he is nearly fully recovered and capable of avoiding more injuries. Twenty of the 49ers’ last 22 games have been missed by Hufanga.
