Defender Roundtable: What Hispanic Americans saw in Trump that Black people didn’t?

Let’s be truthful. The Hispanic community in this nation disappointed many of us during the most recent presidential election season.

The Hispanic community, especially Hispanic men, turned out in force and overwhelmingly backed Donald Trump over Kamala Harris for the presidency. The Latino Trump vote actually increased by 8 points from 2020. For many of us, it seemed unclear how they could vote against their apparent self-interest in putting Trump back in the White House.

They undoubtedly heard what we did, which was that a man who campaigned on fear told America that his main goal was to enforce strict immigration laws because too many Mexicans were breaking the law and committing horrible atrocities against women and children. Trump has maintained his campaign pledge that there will be huge deportations on his first day in office.

Nevertheless, Hispanics turned out to support him.

We brought together a special panel to examine the reasons behind the conversation between the Defender panelists and members of the Hispanic community.

Including Que Onda Magazine founder Gabriel Esparza and his wife and spouse, Liz and Elliott Rodriguez, the Defender Roundtable special panel explored what it was about Trump that appealed to Hispanic Americans. The conversation is excellent.
