No. 1 Oregon football’s vastly improved secondary prepared for either of Washington’s quarterbacks

Eugene While the Huskies’ passing game is far from the same, Oregon’s secondary, which was the defense’s weak point in its three defeats to Washington over the previous two seasons, has significantly improved.

It’s uncertain if Demond Williams Jr., a freshman, will play for the first time tonight (4:30 p.m., NBC) against the No. 1 Ducks or if Rogers will continue to be the starting quarterback for UW. Even if they are stylistically and athletically different, the outcome may not be significantly affected because Oregon is preparing for both unexpected scenarios for the 12th game of the regular season.

Linebacker Jeff Bassa stated that although Williams is a more athletic quarterback than Rogers, the two games are essentially different. I had to be at the top of my game, telling the coaches what I saw outside and what I needed to also be ready for. That brings me to my favorite activity: film analysis.

Williams has participated in every game this season and guided Washington (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) to victory over UCLA. He is completing 73.6% of his throws for 369 yards and rushing for 217 yards and a touchdown. Even as a true freshman, Williams is accustomed to challenging road conditions because he played at Penn State and Iowa.

“I would liken him to Oregon State’s quarterback, Gevani McCoy,” linebacker Bryce Boettcher said. “I know he was pretty mobile in the beginning of the season, getting out of the cage.” He must also be rather young. We’ll try our best to complicate matters for him. We finally got to accomplish what we were supposed to do, which was to plaster and cage the back end.

Rogers, a transfer from Mississippi State, is gaining 2,458 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions on 70.7% of his passes. He is not a danger to run; he is the quintessential pocket passer.

In terms of passing yards per game (257), they have guided UW’s passing attack to sixth place in the Big Ten, however that number falls sharply in two games against ranked opponents (160.5 ypg).

Of all the teams Washington has faced this season, Oregon (11-0, 8-0) has the greatest secondary and pass defense (168.8 ypg. allowed), at least statistically.

RELATED: Jabbar Muhammad of Oregon loves the intense rivalry with the Huskies and does not harbor animosity toward his former teammate

One of the main causes of that is cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, who transferred from UW to UO. He will be ready for the top two Huskies wide outs because he practiced against Denzel Boston and Giles Jackson last season.

Muhammad stated, “I think Boston has really come into his own this year and put everything together.” He excels in three different game types: intermediate, rapid, and deep. He is a truly comprehensive receiver. Going up against him on Saturday excites me.

Jackson is nimble and incredibly fast with the slot machine. Excellent yards after the catch. You’re going to need to try hard to keep him in check.
