An Examination of Boise State

There is a lot more at stake tonight, even though Boise State has already punched its ticket to the Mountain West Conference title game. The Broncos are probably headed to the College Football Playoffs if they win on Friday and in the MWC title game. But that fantasy could be ruined if they make a mistake against the Beavers. Over the last three weeks, the Broncos have prevailed in three games: 28-21 against Nevada, 42-21 against San Jose State, and 17-13 against Wyoming. Boise State defeated the Cowboys last week with a goal with 5:02 left. The Broncos extended a one-score game by scoring twice in the last two minutes of the San Jose State final, which seemed to be one-sided.

Running back Ashley Jeanty of Boise State is competing against Travis Hunter of Colorado for the 2024 Heisman Trophy. This season, Jeanty has run for 2,062 yards and 27 touchdowns. After the initial contact of a defender, he had an amazing 1,512 yards. Additionally, Jeanty has forced 118 missed tackles. The goal, according to OSU defensive coordinator Keith Heyward, is to have several defenders tackle low on the 5-foot-9. Jeanty is unique as his center of gravity is already low and he is strong. He is special. Throughout the season, Jeanty has ran for at least 100 yards in each game and more than 200 yards three times. Along with Melvin Gordon, Ricky Williams, and Barry Sanders, Jeanty is the fourth player in FBS history to carry for 2,000 yards and score 25 touchdowns in a season. Boise State’s offensive output places them in the top 10 in the nation in terms of points (41.2 per game), rushing yards (252.0 per game), overall offense (479.5 per game), and third down conversions (49.6%). With just seven turnovers this season, the Broncos rank fourth among FBS institutions. Maddux Madsen, the quarterback who has started all 11 games, has rushed for three touchdowns and passed for 2,361 yards and 19 touchdowns. Matt Lauter (35-415-6) and Cameron Cooper (45 catches, 738 yards, 4 touchdowns) are the Broncos’ top receiving threats.

Boise State can be defeated by air on defense. The Broncos rank 123rd among FBS schools in terms of passing yards allowed per game, with 261.2. The goal is to get the ball into the air before the quarterback is reached by Boise State’s two-headed pass rush monster. Jayden, an edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein had eight sacks, while Virgin-Morgan has a team-high nine. With a total of 43 sacks, Boise State ranks second in the country, only surpassed by Mississippi. Boise State’s running yields 105.7 yards per game, making it challenging. Ty Benefield leads Boise State in tackles with 63 stops and a team-high two interceptions. At least one sack is owned by twelve different Broncos. Seyi Oladipo has five sacks in addition to Hassanein and Virgin-Morgan.

They stated it.

We need to get hats to the ball, tackle low, and kill his engines. Heyward is the one that keeps their entire organization running well on Jeanty.

That and this

  • Walker also has 849 receiving yards. He needs 151 yards against Boise to become the 14th player in OSU history to crack 1,000 yards.

  • This is OSU s second game on Fox this season. The other was Oregon on September 14.

  • The Beavers are 21 of 37 on fourth down, No. 3 in the country.

  • A week after getting shut out for the first time since 2015, Oregon State scored a season-high 41 points against Washington State.

  • The last time the Beavers won back-to-back games against a top 25 opponent was 2012 (No. 13 Wisconsin/No. 19 UCLA). WSU was ranked No. 25 last week.

  • Temperature at game time is expected to be about 31 degrees. That is the coldest for an Oregon State-Boise State game by a considerable margin. The previous low temperature at kickoff was 58 degrees for the 2016 game in Corvallis.
