In the lead-up to the 2024 election, Florida Democrats are intensifying efforts to secure abortion protections within the state. Their focus is on Amendment 4, a measure that, if passed, would safeguard abortion access up to viability, typically around 24 weeks of pregnancy.
“Florida is on the front lines of this fight, and we’re going to work every single day from now until November to take our rights and our freedoms back,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried at a recent Tallahassee event. This statement underscores the party’s commitment as they rally support across the state.
Amendment 4 seeks to enshrine the right to abortion access up to viability, countering current restrictive measures. “We’re really trying to reach Floridians all over the state, whether they’re rural or urban, and that includes folks across the political spectrum,” explained Natasha Sutherland, Communications Director for Floridians Protection Freedom.
However, achieving the necessary 60% voter approval for a constitutional amendment is a challenge, with considerable opposition, including from Governor Ron DeSantis. He launched the Florida Freedom Fund to oppose Amendment 4 and other measures like the legalization of recreational marijuana. “I’m going to be involved in doing what I think is right for the state,” DeSantis remarked, highlighting his broader political ambitions.

Currently, Florida bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest, and threats to the mother’s life. This stringent law adds urgency to the Democrats’ push for Amendment 4.
