Readers respond: Stop coddling drug users

Once again, the leadership of Multnomah County and the city of Portland has done it. The Portland Clinic must relocate after 100 years in downtown Portland and 50 years at the same facility (The Portland Clinic will discontinue serving patients downtown over safety concerns, Nov. 18).

For months, drug users have gathered on the block where the Portland Clinic is situated. If anything, the Portland Police haven’t done anything to address the issue. Both the employees and patients who visit that facility have options that spare them from having to travel through that neighborhood in order to work or receive care. Consequently, they are departing.

How is the so-called deflection center doing? These junkies should have been picked up and transported there, right? The social workers who are employed to deal with these addicts are nowhere to be found. Why are literally hundreds of millions of dollars wasted year to help these individuals get off the streets and properly cared for?

If the leadership cared as much about law-abiding residents and businesses as they do about those pampered addicts driving out businesses, that would be good.
