CORVALLIS Jake Dickert, the coach of Washington State, stated the following following Saturday’s 41-38 defeat at Reser Stadium against Oregon State:
First sentence:
First and foremost, Dickert said. I mean, our boys give it their all for us. Their response this week is fantastic. We had an excellent practice week, in my opinion. I was grateful for their efforts. They made one more play in the closing moments than we did, and this is a player’s game. It was clearly a back-and-forth contest, in my opinion.
Regarding the last drives, the Oregon State field goal drive and the WSU fumble:
Dickert: Having the ball there at the end made me feel fantastic. They couldn’t really stop us, in my opinion. Furthermore, a game is not won or lost by a single move. What I told these people was that. Well, a single play doesn’t determine the outcome of a game, but there is a microcosm of some ill-executed play, isn’t there? We were harmed by that, particularly early in the game. I’m pleased with our football squad. There is no quit in these men. We didn’t do well tonight, and I’m honored to be their coach.
Resolving the defensive performance:
Dickert: They kept the chains moving tonight, and I believe they were simply so much better than us on fourth downs. We can never get that one to stop. The one we received, I believe, was early in the game. For the remainder of the game, they went 4-for-4. On third down, they are ahead of us. We did an excellent job of halting their run game, in my opinion. We kind of expected them to run the same New Mexico plays from last week, and they came out with five. However, we simply don’t have enough playmaking in the middle of our defense tonight, and Oregon State deserves praise for that.
The passing game of Oregon State:
Dickert: 313 yards were thrown. They used the shot game and the boot game to keep us off balance. We simply couldn’t get a hit out of him. We didn’t have any sacks tonight, I believe. In that sense, it’s one of those situations when they throw a lot and maintain their lead over the chains. We were winning several first downs, isn’t that right? When you started the game, you thought, “We have a chance to go out there and punt a little bit and cause some disruption because we got him in second and long.” I’m quite proud of Ben Gulbranson. We were a little unsure about where that might be. We were aware that if he participated, the Oregon State offense would be more prevalent than Gabarri Johnson and Gevani McCoy. To be ready for both, we will play a slightly more shotgun spread offense.
How can you recover from this?
Dickert The biggest issue is that it concerns our seniors at the moment. It’s Senior Week. Our group has 16 seniors who have worked so hard that we are able to play on home ground. Our goal is to remain unbeaten at home. There are many things to complete. As you can see from the past two outcomes, our guys are really frustrated with this one. We need to improve on a number of aspects in order to play winning football, including a lack of effort and execution. However, you can’t expect to keep winning if you give up 35 points every game, can you? We were able to win the last two games, which were played early in the season. As I mentioned, we had the ball tonight. There was complete assurance that John (Mateer) would lower our score. To be honest, we haven’t made any mistakes this season. With the football, we’ve been excellent. That was a bad time. Everything has been provided by Kyle (Williams). I am aware that this is a single error. He didn’t disappoint his team, even though I know he feels awful about it.
When Johnson was brought in at quarterback by Oregon State, what happened?
Dickert: Throughout the game, they simply didn’t do it. (Johnson) had some parcels and fooled about a little. They immediately hit the speed option, which we just need to do better. We had poor alignment on that play and were in a difficult position to get to the field. There were just a lot of different things.
What is the current thinking of the team?
Dickert: Over the past two weeks, our team’s faith, heart, and mind haven’t wavered. Our guys continue to have faith in our abilities. We were able to perform marginally better. I’m to blame. The head coach is me. In order to use our players to go out there and win football games that we can win, I have to put them in the greatest possible situations, right? We are capable of winning these games, despite our recent two defeats. I therefore first examine myself critically before determining how I might get better. Our lads will follow our instructions, return to practice, and continue to give it their all. I adore and value that aspect of our team.
Regarding winning the close games that were played earlier in the year:
Dickert: Occasionally, it’s the ball’s bounce. After their incredible comeback, the San Jose team found a way to win a game. We got the big choice, Fresno. We were plus-2 heading into the last series in the turnover battle, and thought that was going to end up being the difference. We put one on the ground. It s a team game, though. I will say that you win as a team, you lose as a team. We got to find a way to respond as a football team against a Wyoming team that wants to come in here and finish their season as well.
