Sewage advisory in place for part of Tryon Creek in SW Portland

According to the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, a sewage overflow occurred Friday night, and the public is encouraged to stay away from a portion of Tryon Creek.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, city workers were called to a sewage leak from a repair hole close to 2121 S.W. Multnomah Blvd. Before it was stopped, the agency believes that a few thousand gallons of sewage overflowed.

According to crews, part of the sewage made its way into a storm drain that empties into Tryon Creek. Because there may be more bacteria in the water, the city has posted warning signs close to the spill and tells residents to stay away from the creek downstream of 2121 S.W. Multnomah Blvd. until 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The cause of the overflow is being looked into, according to the Bureau of Environmental Services. According to the bureau, moist wipes flushed down toilets or cooking grease poured down kitchen drains clog pipes, causing the majority of overflows. It is best to dispose of both objects in the trash rather than down the drain.
