Suburban Chicago Man Receives Award for Returning Nearly $6,000 Found at Airport

Bill Winquist, a Franklin Park resident, recently demonstrated exceptional integrity when he discovered a wallet containing nearly $6,000 at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling. The wallet, which was notably overstuffed, caught Winquist’s attention as he observed planes landing before heading to work.

Recalling a humorous scene from Seinfeld, where a character’s large wallet spills its contents, Winquist found himself in a similar situation. After carefully counting and tagging the $5,784 found inside, Winquist attempted to locate the owner without success. Ultimately, he chose to turn the wallet and its contents over to the Prospect Heights Police Department.

Chief Bill Caponigro praised Winquist’s actions, noting that while lost wallets are common, it’s rare to find one with significant cash. Winquist was honored with an outstanding citizenship award for his honesty.

When asked why he returned the money, Winquist responded, “It’s what I would want someone to do for me if I had lost the money. Hopefully, there are more folks out there—more than not—that would do the same thing.”
