Marcel Brown, who spent a decade in prison for a crime he did not commit, has been awarded $50 million by a federal grand jury.
The significant compensation follows Brown’s lawsuit against the City of Chicago, in which he claimed he was coerced into falsely confessing to a murder in August 2008.
The jury’s decision on Monday highlights the severe impact of wrongful convictions and the legal system’s responsibility to rectify such injustices.
Brown was imprisoned for ten years before his conviction was overturned in 2018.
