Speeding Driver in Overland Park Cited for 100+ MPH—Says He ‘Had to Use the Restroom’

A driver was cited for speeding after being clocked going over 100 miles per hour on a local highway, with the driver offering an unusual explanation for the extreme speed: he “had to use the restroom.”

According to the Overland Park Police Department, officers stopped the driver on I-435 after detecting the vehicle traveling at more than 100 mph, well above the posted speed limit of 65 mph. When questioned by authorities, the driver reportedly explained that the urgent need to use the restroom led him to push the pedal to the metal, attempting to reach his destination faster.

While law enforcement understands the occasional need to make quick stops, officers emphasized that speeding at such excessive speeds creates a danger not only for the driver but also for other motorists on the road.

“We understand that people may need to use the restroom, but driving at speeds over 100 mph is not an acceptable excuse for putting lives at risk,” said Officer Sarah Miller of the Overland Park Police Department. “There are safer ways to handle situations like these, such as pulling over to a rest area or gas station.”

The driver, whose identity has not been released, was cited for speeding and reckless driving. Police warned that such behavior could lead to more serious consequences, especially if a high-speed crash were to occur.

Overland Park police cited a driver who allegedly topped 100 mph in a 45 mph zone along West 135th Street near Nall Avenue Friday.

The driver’s excuse for the speed was that he “had to use the restroom,” said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department. The driver was issued a citation with a $590 fine, he said.
