Galesburg Police Arrest Convicted Felon After Backyard Gunfire Incident

Galesburg police arrested Leslie Mixon, 60, after he allegedly fired several rounds from a firearm in his backyard on the evening of August 16. Officers responded to a disturbance report in the 900 block of E. Brooks Street at approximately 9:58 p.m.

Upon investigation, they discovered that Mixon, a convicted felon, had discharged a firearm in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Following Mixon’s arrest, police obtained a search warrant for his residence, uncovering a substantial cache of weapons. The search led to the seizure of four handguns, one AR-style rifle, five shotguns, five rifles, and numerous rounds of ammunition.

Mixon now faces multiple charges, including unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Galesburg Police Chief Russell Idle emphasized the department’s commitment to community safety, highlighting the significance of removing 15 illegal weapons from circulation.

Mixon is currently being held in the Knox County Jail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 16 in Knox County Court.
