Some of the NFL’s most intelligent and seasoned players will face off in this Super Bowl. Fangio and Reid are 66. Spagnuolo is sixty-five.
It will depend on the performance of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and teammates on the field against Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Jalen Carter, and the rest of Philadelphia’s talented roster when Kansas City (17-2) attempts a three-peat on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles (17-3).
However, it begins with the coordinators and coaches and their plans. They must make the greatest play calls and come up with the right game strategy.
This season, Kansas City ranked 16th in total yards, which put them in the middle of the pack offensively. However, Mahomes can always work his magic, especially on the greatest stage, and Reid has been a wizard of offense for thirty years.
They will play against Fangio, who in his first season in Philadelphia transformed one of the league’s weakest defenses into the NFL’s top defensive.
Barkley’s incredible season gave the Eagles the second-best rushing offense, and Hurts’ passing attack is strong despite their 29th-place ranking thanks to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
They must find a method to defeat Spagnuolo, who 17 years ago devised the ideal strategy to keep the Patriots from having a flawless season. As defensive coordinator for the Giants, Spagnuolo earned his first ring; with Kansas City, he has since earned three more.
When the Eagles have the ball
Barkley. Barkley. Barkley. With 2,447 total yards rushing and 18 touchdowns, including seven of more than 60 yards, the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year has an impressive resume. It all begins with him. Every time he touches the ball, he can go the distance, and he has been outstanding this season. The Eagles, however, have a lot more firepower. Barkley became the NFL’s top home run hitter because Hurts is a threat to run, which keeps defenders off balance.
Hurts has proven effective in spite of pedestrian passing statistics. He is a good ball handler; in his last 15 games, he has only thrown one and five interceptions. When the Eagles needed him, he had strong throwing performances against the Commanders in the NFC championship game and the Steelers in mid-December. He had a passer rating of 103.7.
Even when he sits on the sidelines reading a book, Brown is a top receiver. Hurts also has Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert as top targets.
One of the NFL’s best offensive lines, anchored by tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, is the secret to Philadelphia’s offensive prowess.
Even the most successful teams may have difficulties due to Spagnuolo. Nearly twenty years ago, in the Super Bowl, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the Patriots learned.
Spagnuolo’s corner blitz on fourth and five with the game on the line gave Buffalo’s Josh Allen another taste of it during the AFC championship game.
Kansas City’s defense gave up the fourth-fewest points and finished ninth overall.
Jones is an edge, interior lineman, and All-Pro. Tershawn Wharton, a defensive tackle, recorded 6 1/2 sacks, while George Karlaftis topped the team with eight. Trent McDuffie, a cornerback, made the second team All-Pro. The matchup between Brown and McDuffie might become a classic.
Even though Hurts can go away and rush for large gains, Philadelphia will need to protect him.
Moore, a rookie Eagles coordinator who was probably coaching his final game with Philadelphia, took over the offense after Sirianni left it to him. Moore is anticipated to take over as the Saints’ head coach.
When Kansas City has the ball
Kansas City has the 22nd-ranked rushing assault and the 14th-ranked passing offense in the league, behind Mahomes. The Eagles ranked second in scoring, tenth against the run, and first overall and against the pass.
Against Fangio’s defenses, Mahomes is 8-0. However, since 1970, defense-first teams have won 10 straight Super Bowls.
Mahomes is an expert at creating plays and figuring out how to win games, particularly those that are close. By his standards, his numbers were poor. A 93.5 rating, 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Despite his decline throughout the regular season, Kelce is a key player during the postseason. Mahomes also has first-round selection Xavier Worthy, DeAndre Hopkins, and Marquise Brown. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt are both good runners.
Along with right guard Trey Smith, the offensive line is anchored by All-Pro center Creed Humphrey and All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney. Thuney is a left-handed tackle.
Their job will be to keep Carter at bay and push Nolan Smith away from Mahomes. The rush might be strengthened by the return of Brandon Graham, whose strip-sack of Brady secured Philadelphia’s lone Super Bowl victory seven years ago.
Zack Baun, an All-Pro linebacker, will be crucial against Mahomes, and the matchup between rookie slot cornerback Cooper DeJean and Kelce could decide the outcome. Philadelphia has a strong defensive tandem against the pass in cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Darius Slay.
Reid is imaginative and doesn’t hesitate to introduce new wrinkles. Fangio tries to thwart big plays by disguising coverages.
When Mahomes lost to Tampa Bay in his lone Super Bowl game four years ago, he was constantly under pressure. For the Eagles to have a chance, they must make him uncomfortable.
Special teams
This season, Eagles kicker Jake Elliott has struggled. During the regular season, he only made one of seven field goals from more than fifty yards out, going 28 of 36. Despite missing three extra points, he is 6 for 7 on field goals in the playoffs.
Kicker, K.C. Harrison Butker forced overtime last year with a tying field goal and made the game-winning field goal against the Eagles in the Super Bowl two years ago. During the regular season, he missed two extra points and was 21 of 25 on field goals. In the playoffs, he had a 9 for 9 kick percentage.
The Eagles averaged 9.2 yards on punt returns and 26.5 on kick returns.
Kansas City averaged 9.9 yards on punt returns and 27.1 on kick returns.
Coaching
Sirianni was thought to be coaching for his job this season and the fickle folks in Philly were calling for him to be fired at 2-2. But he just keeps winning. He has the fifth-best winning percentage in NFL history and is the only coach in franchise history to reach the Super Bowl twice.
Reid will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after he retires. He already has three Super Bowl rings and is the winningest coach in the history of Kansas City and the Eagles.
Intangibles
The Eagles came close two years ago and know anything less than winning a Lombardi trophy won t be considered a success in Philadelphia. They re not satisfied with getting here.
Kansas City is aiming to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to three-peat. Reid and Mahomes are chasing Bill Belichick and Brady while they have to win three more Super Bowls to match them.
