Repeat DUI driver gets 10 years in fatal Portland crash; Clackamas judge shortlist revealed; and more

On Friday, a drunk driver who was speeding so much that his Volkswagen Jetta sprang sparks just before a deadly collision was given a 10-year sentence in state jail.

From the courtroom where he entered a no contest plea to second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, and driving under the influence of alcohol, Jacob Tabor could almost see the scene of the collision on Southwest Naito Parkway.

Wael Zahran, a 23-year-old Palestinian American who had relocated to Tigard two years earlier, was killed in an accident on February 10, 2024, but Tabor, 47, says he has no memory of it.

Nariman Mosharaf and Harris Capito, two of Zahran’s buddies, also suffered severe injuries.

According to court records, Tabor had received more than a dozen citations for driving while intoxicated before undergoing DUII diversion in 2011.

15 applicants seek spot on Clackamas County bench

Numerous attorneys have submitted applications to be the 11th judge on the Circuit Court of Clackamas County.

The new post was approved by state lawmakers last year, and the person who receives Gov. Tina Kotek’s approval will start serving on the bench on July 1.

Marie Atwood, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training legal coordinator; Cierra Brown, a municipal judge in Lake Oswego; Steven Cade, an attorney for Sussman Shank; Stephanie Engelsman, a public defender; Clackamas County Juvenile Judge Colleen Gilmartin; Amber Labrecque, a civil attorney; Angela Laidlaw, a family lawyer; M. Scott Leibenguth, a family lawyer; Anastasiav Meisner, an estate planner; Suzanne Miles, a civil litigator; Roxanne Scott, a lawyer in Canby; Christopher Shull, a prosecutor in Multnomah County; Max Wall, an attorney; and Michael Wu, a prosecutor in Clackamas County.

Circuit judges are paid $174,000 annually.

Drunken driver who killed 2 passengers in crash gets 20 years

Julius Whitehurst was given a 20-year sentence in state prison on Friday. Whitehurst escaped from his smashed automobile while two of his teenage passengers were lying dead on Southeast Foster Avenue.

After being ejected from the SUV, Onesty Jones, 15, and Kamareon Smith, 13, passed away on the spot.

It doesn’t seem fair to me. However, Kamareon Smith’s mother, Keyshia Smith, stated that it is ultimately a relief.

Four months after the July 5, 2023 crash, Whitehurst, now 20, also entered a guilty plea to firing a gun at a car in a shooting.

The 34-year-old Jacob McBain-Birdwell was given a 30-year prison term for raping two adolescent girls in 2017 and 2022.

A second man has been charged by prosecutors with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that occurred during a car chase in April 2023.December 17 saw the arrest of 31-year-old Joe Luna Roy.

Mariah C. Dickison, 34, is accused of hurling a cup of boiling water at a police officer inside Monty’s Cafe on January 5 and has been charged with second-degree assault.
