Situated on an elevated acre site in Portland’s Southwest Hills, this mid-century home with wings spreading from its glass-fronted center sold for $1,033,500 on January 28.
According to selling broker Brian Johnson of Windermere Realty Trust, the expansive home, which resembles a landed jumbo jet encircled by vegetation, features roomy, light-filled rooms and wide interior passageways that make daily life a breeze.
Classic midcentury modern elements, such as open concept rooms with the fewest interior barriers, windows that rise to vaulted ceilings, and simple, clean lines, are still present in the 1966 home on Southwest Hewett Boulevard.
Johnson told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the property’s distinctive design, vaulted ceilings, expansive valley views, and one-story living were the main reasons the purchasers bought it.
The circular driveway is where the wonderful Space Age appeal begins. Visitors enter the glass-walled house through an appealing porch with an inclined roof.
Johnson remarked, “I love the elegant feeling you get when you pull up to this home.” More surprises await you at the front door and towering portico. A wraparound deck with numerous outdoor lounging and discussion spots and a double-sided wood-burning fireplace between the dining and living rooms add to the Mad Men-era swagger.
The 2,766-square-foot interior, according to Johnson, evokes a sensation of luxury as well as something almost whimsical and enjoyable.
The gourmet kitchen leads to a room that can be used as a family room or dining area, and it features a sizable eating bar.
The spacious main bedroom features a bathroom with a bathtub adjacent to a shower that is surrounded by glass-block walls, as well as two walk-in closets. Two more bedrooms and baths are available.
There are work and storage spaces in the spacious two-car garage. According to Johnson, an additional space between the kitchen and garage entry can be utilized as an office.
On September 14, 2024, Johnson with Andrea Young of Windermere Realty Trust put the property for sale for $1,095,000. On October 15, the price reduced by $10,000 to $1,085,000, and on December 26, the offer was accepted. Public records show that the purchase concluded at $1,033,500 on January 28.
Carina Liu of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate represented the buyer.
History of the house

The land was developed by residential contractor John E. Kallstrom, who sold the house to G. Edward and Frederica Bissell after it was finished in 1966.
Milt Lampros, a steel distributor who was well-known for hosting parties during his 20 years of ownership, bought the property in 1991.
The late Milt Lampros began his 60-year career in the steel industry as an office boy at Gilmore Steel in San Francisco, where he learned most of his skills on his own. In 1959, he relocated to Portland and began working for American Steel’s Howard Hedinger.
Steel had a key role in the development of new buildings, bridges, highways, and other industries following World War II, as well as in the economic success and creativity of the Jet Age in aerospace.
One of the biggest distributors of structural steel in the Northwest, Lampros Steel was founded in 1983 by Lampros and his son Marcus.
