Deputies rescue kayaker who fell into the Tualatin River

A woman who fell from a kayak into the Tualatin River and had a medical emergency after landing in the icy waters was saved by sheriff’s deputies.

David Huey, a spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the woman, whose identity has not been made public, was kayaking with two of her friends on January 12 at 2:30 p.m. when she struck a tree and fell out of the kayak.

She managed to get back into her kayak, but she was soaked and cold. Ten minutes later, she slipped out of the kayak once more and needed assistance from her companions to get onto the riverbank, Huey said.

Sheriff’s authorities stated in a statement on Wednesday that when deputies arrived to assist the woman, they discovered that she was trapped on the opposite bank of the river and that it was hard to see or get to the kayakers from either side of the river due to the dense vegetation on the river’s border.

One deputy used a kayak borrowed from a friend to cross the river and administer first aid in time to save the woman who was running out, while another officer carved a way through the bushes on the opposite side of the river to allow emergency personnel to access the riverbank, according to Huey.

According to sheriff’s officials, the woman survived after being taken to a hospital by rescuers.
