Dear Annie: My life seems great. So why do I feel like something is missing?

To Annie, please: My life has been rather boring lately. My life appears to be going well on paper. I have a reliable group of friends, a respectable work that covers my expenses, and a consistent and predictable daily schedule.

However, I’ve been questioning lately if good enough is indeed enough.

For instance, I’ve been working at my current job for a few years, and although I don’t detest it, I also don’t find it particularly exciting. I feel like I’ve crossed something off my list for the day when I wake up, get to work, and go home. My friendships are strong, yet it seems like we’re all confined to superficial discussions, avoiding the more important ones.

I feel bad for even doubting my life when so many others are having difficulties, but it’s not like anything is wrong. However, I can’t get rid of the sensation that I’m in a rut and leading a mediocre existence when it could be more.

Even if nothing is coming apart, is it natural to feel this way? How can I tell if I’m overanalyzing everything or if something is missing? — Between Fulfilled and Fine

To Stuck, It is quite typical for you to feel this way. If nothing else, it demonstrates your depth as a person who aspires to a more meaningful and purposeful existence. Desiring to love your life is quite OK.

Having said that, list the things that really thrill you. Do you have any interests in new talents or pastimes? It truly comes down to trying out various everyday pursuits and identifying the ones that make you feel happy and invigorated again.
