Historic Birth at Detroit Zoo: First Baby Gorilla Arrives After 96 Years

The Detroit Zoo in suburban Detroit has made history with the birth of its first-ever baby gorilla. The zoo, which has been around for 96 years, announced that the baby gorilla was born on Thursday, August 8, 2024. This marks a significant milestone for the zoo, as it is the first time a gorilla has been born there.

Bandia, the baby gorilla’s mother, had a smooth pregnancy, which was crucial for her as a first-time mom, according to Tami Brightrall, the zoo’s associate curator of mammals. The baby gorilla, whose name and sex have not yet been determined, joins a troop of four other gorillas at the zoo. This includes Bandia and the baby’s father, Mshindi, both of whom arrived at the zoo just a year ago.

The arrival of the baby gorilla is an exciting event for the zoo, and the staff has been diligently preparing for this moment for months. To ensure that the gorillas were ready for the new arrival, the zoo’s staff carried a stuffed gorilla around the habitat to demonstrate how to properly carry the baby. Brightrall explained that the team also trained the gorillas to gently touch the stuffed animal, pick it up off the ground, and bring it to a member of the team standing at the mesh barrier.

While this is a joyous occasion, the public will have to wait a little longer before they can see the baby gorilla and its family. Melissa Thueme, a mammal supervisor at the zoo, mentioned that the area where the gorillas are housed will remain closed for now. The area will only reopen once the animal care team feels confident that Bandia and her baby have had enough time to bond and are comfortable in their habitat.

This moment is not just a milestone for the Detroit Zoo but also an important step in the conservation of gorillas, which are critically endangered in the wild. The birth of this baby gorilla represents hope for the future of the species and highlights the zoo’s ongoing efforts to care for and protect these magnificent animals.
