The suspect fled at high speed and crashed into a streetcar stop in Northwest Portland on Saturday, police said, during an effort to stop a guy driving a stolen vehicle.
Around 9:49 a.m., an officer near Northwest 14th Avenue and Johnson Street noticed the stolen vehicle parked there along with the unidentified individual inside. According to an email from Sgt. Kevin Allen.
When cops attempted to pull the suspect over, he fled at high speed in the wrong direction down a one-way street, according to Allen.
Allen stated that the man lost control of the stolen vehicle and collided into a streetcar stop at Northwest 10th Avenue and Glisan Street after the officers switched off their police lights to prevent him from continuing to drive carelessly.
Witnesses shared video evidence with The Oregonian/OregonLive. Three individuals flee for their lives as Jeremy Bennett depicts the automobile smashing into the streetcar stop and onto the platform.
The video then shows the guy trying to run away on foot while a policeman pursues him; according to Allen, they apprehended and detained him.
According to Allen, no other injuries were reported at the scene, but the suspect was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
According to trimet.org, streetcar service was briefly interrupted but is currently operating on its usual timetable.
