On the National Assessment of Educational Progress assessments, 45% of eighth grade test-takers in Oregon scored below basic, compared to 41% nationally, in math rather than reading. This indicates that individuals have trouble with fundamental math concepts, such as simplifying whole-number statements. Only Delaware, West Virginia, New Mexico, and Alabama had math scores in the eighth grade that were noticeably worse than Oregon’s. The trend lines in reading were misstated in an item published in the Wednesday issue.
