On July 6, Grayson shot and killed Massey in her home after she called for help. Campbell has defended his hiring decision by noting that Grayson had passed all required tests and evaluations. Despite this, Grayson’s background raised serious concerns, including accusations of bullying and previous disciplinary issues.
Grayson was fired following the incident and has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The circumstances of the shooting, combined with Grayson’s problematic history, have led to intense scrutiny of Campbell’s decision-making.
